Woodhouse Grove School

By yasemin August 8, 2019

Woodhouse Grove was founded in 1812 and is a co-educational day and boarding school with 1060 pupils aged from 3 to 18 years.

An Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection in March 2017 rated all aspects of Woodhouse Grove School as excellent. The Inspectors came away with very clear evidence of the attributes that we seek to promote, namely: Inspiration, Challenge and Grovian Values. Our outstanding academic and co-curricular programme was recognised and our aim to ensure that all our pupils reach their full potential was substantiated.

At Woodhouse Grove, we appreciate that every child is a unique individual and this is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to motivate pupils academically and beyond the classroom and to provide an educational environment designed to allow students to fully participate in school life.

We offer a rich, challenging and dynamic curriculum and want our students to ask questions of the world around them with an open mind; to have the character to listen to others, but also to stand up for their beliefs. We encourage our pupils to ‘give back’ to their community and we believe that this well-rounded, diverse approach is the key to building academic and personal confidence. Ultimately, our objective is to provide our students with the drive and aspiration to become the very best version of themselves that they can be.

Set in idyllic grounds near Leeds, the school is opposite Apperley Bridge train station and within four miles of Leeds Bradford Airport. We have high standards and an all-encompassing approach to education and our outstanding facilities reflect this. A recording studio, 230 seater theatre, sports halls, swimming pool and climbing wall are all within our 70 acre campus.

Our junior school, Brontë House enjoys its own facilities on a superb site situated half a mile from the Senior School, and includes our purpose built Early Years centre, Ashdown Lodge. Brontë is a busy and friendly place with the happiness and wellbeing of its pupils firmly at its heart. Our excellent academic curriculum is supported by enriching experiences in music, drama, art, outdoor education and sport. Our small class sizes allow us to focus on individuals and to instil a love of learning in each and every pupil. Children automatically transfer through to Woodhouse Grove at age 11.

Woodhouse Grove’s holistic approach to education means that we offer a comprehensive range of co-curricular activities to run alongside our academic curriculum. Woodhouse Grove has a proud sporting heritage and we aim to nurture a love of sport in all of our students regardless of ability. Significant numbers of Grovians gain district, county, regional and international honours and pursue sporting careers at leading universities, professional sports clubs and scholarship opportunities in the USA.

We also have an extensive music and drama programme involving 30% of all pupils at the school, across a wide variety of clubs. School productions are held in our fully equipped theatre, offering both on stage and technical backstage opportunities to students from all age groups.

The diversity and richness of boarding at Woodhouse Grove School, coupled with our strong academic standards, attracts students from all over the world. Boarding is a thriving and integral part of our school life where students are enveloped in a caring family environment and are provided with stimulating and challenging experiences throughout the week and at weekends. They have access to all the school facilities as well as the chance to participate in specific boarding events, such as camping trips.

We welcome parents to visit Woodhouse Grove and Brontë House on our open days or at any time by prior arrangement. Dates and details are publicised on the school website or telephone for further information.
